In a move that will no doubt be exciting for Texans, Apple has announced plans to build a new campus in Austin Texas. The city is known for its eclectic culture including numerous live music venues where the world’s best jazz and blues entertainers often go to perform. Austin is also the home of the second largest concentration of Apple workers, with their home base of Cupertino, California being first.
The new Apple campus will provide a much-needed expansion of their existing operations where over 6,000 people are employed by the tech giant.
Apple Plans Announced in Press Release
The new plans were announced in a recent press conference by Apple VP of real estate, Kristina Raspe. She said that construction would begin soon and they expect the first building to be ready for occupancy by 2021. The new campus will encompass 133 acres on their Robinson Ranch property. It should be able to accommodate 5,000 employees and will be powered 100 percent by renewable energy. Plans include the ability to expand the campus to accommodate 15,000 employees in the future.
With this move, Apple will become the largest private employer in Texas. Governor Greg Abbott commented, saying, “Apple is among the world’s most innovative companies and an avid creator of jobs in Texas and across the country. Their decision to expand operations in our state is a testament to the high-quality workforce and unmatched economic environment that Texas offers.” Governor Abbott added, “This project does so much. This truly elevates Austin as one of the premier technology hubs in the world.”
Moving to Texas Soon?
The new campus will focus on areas of employment including R&D, engineering, customer support, finance and sales. It should spur a major boom to Texas’ already healthy economy. During the recession of 2008, the Texas economy remained strong with lower unemployment rates than other states.
Apple has also announced plans to invest $350 billion in the U.S. over the next five years, with $30 billion going toward capital investments that include various construction projects. In 2017, the company announced plans to invest $10 billion in data centers in the U.S. with a new facility planned for Waukee, Iowa. Facebook announced similar plans to invest $1.5 billion in Altoona, Iowa to build a new data center with Microsoft announcing similar plans for projects in the Iowa area.
In addition to strengthening the U.S. economy, these companies receive massive tax breaks from local and federal government agencies.
