White Hart Lane stadium has been under construction for some time now. The 60,000 capacity stadium project was to be completed in September of 2018. This would be just in time for a Premier League soccer game to be played between the Spurs and Manchester City, two of the UK’s finest soccer teams.
However, an unusual event has delayed the stadium’s completion and now the teams will have to play at Wembley. The cause of this? Excessive drinking and drugs among the construction workers.
This is not the first delay in this construction project. Many city leaders have made allegations that the project was being run by chaotic management people. This massive project has employed as high as 4,000 workers during its course. But these workers are now being accused of drinking too much and taking drugs on the job.
One city leader described the construction workers as “off their heads on cocaine.”
Construction on Tottenham Hotspur Football Club
White Hart Lane stadium has been home to the Tottenham Hotspur Football (soccer) Club for many years. It had fallen into disrepair and become too small to host the big games. Soccer has long been one of England’s most popular sports and is even popular in the United States.
To deal with this, a massive renovation was planned on the stadium. Construction began on White Hart Lane Stadium in 2012 but it has been troubled with many delays. This latest allegation comes from an unknown source who said that, “There were people off their heads, drinking cans (of beer) first thing in the morning before going on to site and snorting coke in the toilets.”
The construction is being handled by Mace Group Ltd. This company has worked on big projects before such as a renovation of Heathrow Airport. The company has locations around the world in Dubai, New York City, London and Hong Kong and has a solid reputation in the construction world.
The stadium project has been a much different story. Construction managers have been accused of “lack of direction” and poor organization. They have not been careful in hiring subcontractors to work on the cable, electrical and other components of the construction project. The estimated cost, which originally was £850 million, is now escalating as Mace attempts to hire new construction workers. They have pledged to do drug testing on all workers, including sub-contractors.
In the meantime, the club will be playing at Wembley for the foreseeable future.
Other Troubles for Mace
Though Mace Construction has strongly refuted the allegations of drug and alcohol abuse amongst workers, there have been numerous reports that claim, “What should take a week normally takes a month, because of the sheer scale of it, but also because the communication is horrendous.”
Although these delays have been frustrating, the Tottenham Hotspur Football club is assuring fans that the stadium will be completed soon and will provide an upscale, modern facility that fans will enjoy.
