In the construction world, the process and requirements seem to change at an ever-increasing pace. However, with terrorists both at home and abroad, most new buildings include a higher level of security. This level increases for buildings that house government facilities and military compounds. In addition, the building infrastructure must include every type of security as global threats evolve.
Drones and UAVs
Today’s intelligent business campus includes the latest technology and that includes drones. These drones can monitor a campus or business center day and night with very little effort. They are more popularly known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and they collect photos and videos of people and activities. The US military has been using these UAVs for some time now to gather intelligence, track smugglers, and for surveillance.
How counter-drones work
The counter-drone system is designed to combat and deal with drones being used illegally. This defensive drone watches for unauthorized drone activity that might be in the area to steal critical information about a government facility. Often construction workers around a new site are not familiar with the drone system and have no idea that a counter-drone system might be in place. This is done intentionally to increase building security but workers may be surprised and curious when they see them.
Some types of equipment used by workers can affect the operation of drones and counter-drones. However, since security is so important, workers are often not aware of the risks. While security is important, accidents can occur if workers are not aware of drones and counter drone systems being used at the facility.
Working around security drones
At the moment, counter-drone systems utilize radar, sensors, cameras, monitors, radio frequency detection and other technology. Some of these can be compromised by certain construction tools and programs. As law enforcement moves forward, they must decide whether to disclose the presence of drones and counter drones to local workers. On one hand, workers do need this information to avoid interfering. On the other hand, this information is typically kept secret for optimum effectiveness. Therefore, a good compromise must be found.
If thieves or terrorists know about a drone system, they can take precautions to avoid it. Without educating local workers, they might unintentionally damage a drone. This has led to discussions on many levels about the best way to proceed. Since almost all construction sites do now include a level of security, a good compromise might be to inform only supervisors or security people of the presence of drones.
Dealing with enemy drones
In some cases, drones controlled by malicious individuals are employed to take out the security drones. To combat this, a monitoring system continuously tracks the activities of drones and counter drones. If foreign drones are spotted, they can be dealt with by forces on the ground or in the air. The drone system also has the ability to destroy, intercept or retrieve a drone.
First of all, the drone system is growing each year with counter drone systems increasing in usage. Regardless of whether a marketplace is private, military or government, every effort must be made to protect citizens from attacks. In the future, expect to see drone systems used by private organizations, the military, law enforcement and many others.
