The whole world has embraced the need for alternative energy as we move forward into the future. We live in a world where climate change initiatives are imperative to our survival. Many companies and home builders are now incorporating energy saving features and solar technology. However, none have been as ambitious as this city of the future. It is being planned by Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz bin Saud, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.
Last year, he announced plans to build a city of the future called Neom. It will be built near Jordan and Egypt, along the country’s Red Sea coastline. The projected cost will be £380 billion, which is approximately $500 billion USD. The city will use alternative energy to power everything from lights to electronics.
The prince said the city project will operate independently from the “existing governmental framework” with investors consulted at every step during development. The project will be backed by more than $500 billion from the Saudi government and investors. In addition to using its sovereign wealth fund, local and international investors will be involved.
Though the city of the future project seems lofty, the entire region of the United Arab Emirates, including Jordan, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai, contain some of the most extraordinary manmade structures ever built. Three artificial islands are currently being built off the coast of Dubai. Dubbed the Palm Islands, only one has been completed to date: Palm Jumeirah. Construction on the other two has slowed due to a sluggish real estate market in the region.
Environmentalists are concerned about the impact to the sea, shoreline, wildlife, reefs and marine fauna. They believe that these projects are damaging the surrounding environment, causing coastal erosion and harming sea life. With these negative drawbacks in mind, the Saudi Prince has designed his new city to lie fully onshore. This should prevent damage to marine life flora and fauna.
The city of Neom will use robotics, drones, smart pavement and driver less cars, among other new innovations, to create a true “City of the Future.”
Details of the project were unveiled by Prince Mohammed at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh last April. He announced the project there saying that his kingdom was making definite strides away from oil exports as their major source of income. He believes the nation must develop new and better revenue streams.
Prince Mohammed has made it clear to the world that his kingdom is moving toward bold reforms, such as lifting the ban on women driving. Though only 32 years old, he believes that his country needs to return to moderate Islam and work to defeat extremists. The country is eliminating extremism in all its forms The prince reminds his citizens that the Islam of the past was fair, moderate and taught citizens to live in harmony with the rest of the world.
Prince Mohammed addressed a panel of well-known business leaders, saying, “We will eradicate the remnants of extremism very soon. We represent the moderate teachings and principles of Islam.”
Moving Into the Future
Most world leaders view this as a positive step forward for the Middle East, a region that has often been troubled with war over the centuries.
As planning for the futuristic city of Neom moves forward into its first building stages, it will present a golden opportunity for workers around the world. In order to complete Neom properly, planners will need many construction workers. In addition to electricians, plumbers, and cable installers, a wide range of other professions will be involved. This will no doubt cause a boom in construction and other industries for the next 10 to 20 years.
As all workers know, your tools represent a big investment and they are crucial to completing any job. Whether you’re building a new shed out back or a new city of the future on the Red Sea, good tools are important. Good tool storage is essential as well. It prevents damage to expensive tools, while making things readily available to workers.
